Recently headed down to LA for an excellent painting workshop by Dreamworks artist Nathan Fowkes.
After the workshop,we headed back north and turned off on some remote road that cut through a part of California that felt like another planet. We stopped and painted until the heat and the flies were too much. Flies in the mouth, nose and most irritatingly - in the ears. Since the Fowkes workshop I've been painting every free moment. I had forgotten how fun and magical it can be to paint landscapes. And the same feeling has returned to figure drawing. Here are two pages from a sketchbook of recent attempts. One from a figure session and another painting done on the spot at the Mission in Santa Clara.

I spent the one sunny day of the week listening to Linda Ronstadt's Living in the USA with my Dad in the backyard. He kicked it on a lawn chair, while I practiced my spray can.
Check out my can control (thank you one20crew, all the way back in 2002!)
I started this as a live painting in September last year at the Indy Arts fest in Golden Gate park. Its up now on South First street as part of a two wall Phantom Galleries project.

You can see the installation at380 South First Street in downtown San Jose, just a few buildings over from Anno Domini Gallery.

If you came to Barbarian then you saw the skulls and the cape made of animal hide. Paintings will be up at Barefoot thru Sept. Work by Pugnetti, Reiji, Kyle Pellet, Mike Martinez, Jimmy Lam, and Me.

I ran into Sean Boyles at the event and he showed me a sketchbook page he'd done of the Marvel roster and it moved me to tears. Here is a Wolverine from a few days back. I did it in my new base of operations: the Alamo Square hood of SF. I've got a great wood desk here that I am loving. You can see it creeping into the photo. I've got a Cyclops and Beast sitting on the drawing board too. But for now you just get Wolverine. This one is for all my kin. With love. You know exactly who you are.

The De Anza Mural is in the headlines, this story from ABC 7 News

I painted the tree and orchards section of the mural in 2000. It was the first mural I'd ever painted. It took way too long...nearly a year for us to complete. We were so young and inexperienced. When it was finally finished the reaction was amazing. Worth all the blood sweat and tears. So now, after nine years, its funny to see it in need of a restoration. I don't know Eric White, as he wasn't a painter on the original project.

The mural was painted in individual sections by a team of artists.

Starting on the left, the cityscape was by the very talented Josh Luke. He's now a member of the SF band Finest Dearest.
To the right of the cityscape, the crowd was by Maria Pugnetti aka Wooly Mar.
Next came the tree section by me.
To the right of the tree is Erin Kawamata's DNA strand.
Below that is the graf section by John Daguia.
The Television cube is by Rebecca Hartman, and the final right side image of the globe is by Scott Selby.
Small portraits of all of the artists are hidden in the crowd scene painted by Maria Pugnetti.

A few week back I visited Marina PW at the SFMOMA. She was four floors up, balanced on scaffolding, hard at work painting a large mural for Kerry James Marshall's show. I was impressed. I did a quick drawing of two members of her team.

Here are the first photos of a work in progress. The structure was designed by Matthew. I'm in the process of adding painted paper panels to all of the sides.

Last week Beastlore artist Matthew Pugnetti came over and we spent half a day painting. Here is a photo of the results, unfinished. Note the tea cup in hand. True Barbarians drink tea. Green tea. Sometime this summer we are hoping to show this piece, his Barbarian paintings, and all of my Barbarian paintings. Several other collaborations in the works.
